Auburn to face New Mexico in 2019 Legends Classic semifinals

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Auburn men’s basketball team is scheduled to face New Mexico in the semifinals of the 2019 Legends Classic, Nov. 25 at 8:30 p.m. CT on ESPNEWS, the Gazelle Group announced Thursday.

The Legends Classic is set to take place in Brooklyn, N.Y. at the Barclays Center, home to the NBA franchise Brooklyn Nets.

The Tigers and Lobos are joined by Richmond and Wisconsin, who will play the first game of the night at 6 p.m. CT.

Following the result of the semifinals, the winners play in the championship on Nov. 26 at 6 or 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2, while the third-place game is slated to begin at 4 p.m. CT on ESPN2 or ESPNU.

“Growing up in Boston, New York City was always a hub for college and professional basketball,” head coach Bruce Pearl said. “From a standpoint of our student-athletes, getting the chance to visit one of the greatest cities in the world, especially before Thanksgiving and the holiday season, was something I didn't want to pass up.

“You’ve got all corners of the country covered in this year’s Legends Classic. You’ve got Wisconsin in the north, New Mexico in the west, Richmond in the east and Auburn in the south. We’re looking forward to the competition.”

Auburn has played against New Mexico one time in program history. The Tigers triumphed 83-78 in the first round of the 2015 Diamond Head Classic during Coach Pearl’s second season at the helm.

Kareem Canty dropped 27 points with seven assists, while T.J. Dunans added 20 points to help secure the victory. Cinmeon Bowers chimed in with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Tigers are 2-2 against the remainder of the field, holding a 2-1 record vs. Richmond and a 0-1 mark against Wisconsin all-time.

In addition to two games in New York, Auburn is slated to host a pair of games in the regional rounds as part of the Legends Classic.

The Tigers are scheduled to take on Cal State Northridge (CSUN) on Nov. 15 and Colgate on Nov. 18 inside Auburn Arena.

Despite losing five key contributors from the first Final Four team in program history, Auburn brings back a wealth of experience, spearheaded by a senior class of five, along with one of the top recruiting classes in the country.
